Microgreens, There are many chefs who use microgreen as the ingredient or as to add color, flavor or to provide garnish to the food. They actually gives a very nice texture, spice flavor or delicate green color to any dish.
The main thing we mostly people thinks about that how to grow microgreens at home. Because microgreens are something which are big on nutrition and taste. Microgreens can be expensive to purchase from the market. So it is the best option to grow them at home. Plus point is they are so easy to grow.
You can grow in your balcony or in kitchen garden. Mainly urban people used to grow them. Additionally they can be grown in a small container.
Let’s know what actually Microgreens are?
WHAT ARE MICROGREENS?
Microgreens are the young tender green leafy vegetable which are basically harvested on their very immature stage. And they provide a very nice palette of colors, texture or flavors.
Microgreens can be defined as the salad crop shoots that harvests within 10 to 20 days sawing for consumption. Size of them is between 1 to 3 inches. Hence, means to say that microgreens are the young vegetable greens. Although they are young but contain as similar nutrients as of mature vegetables. Even though, they are small and tiny but have an amazing and delicate texture with an extraordinary distinctive taste. In general, Microgreens contain more micro nutrients and health promoting nutrient in comparison to their mature counterpart.
Now, there are some more greens as baby greens, sprouts. But the major difference between Baby greens, sprouts and microgreens is the harvest time.
Baby greens are harvested when they become about 2 to 4 inch of height for 15-40 days while microgreens are harvested just after the young leaves appears. Now coming to sprouts, harvest time of sprouts is earlier to microgreens.
Microgreens are also famous for their various colors. Therefore used in the salads, soups, plates and sandwiches to give a nice aroma and beautiful appearance.
GROWING CONDITIONS TO GROW MICROGREENS
Microgreens are environment friendly along with high nutrient content.
The best point for them, is that they do not want any kind of pesticides or fertilizers and energy demanding transport from farm to table. Although growing condition plays an important role on the growth and level of phytonutrients.
1. Seed sowing
This is important because this actually means competition for the limited resources like water and nutrients.
Fertilizers are important to supply essential nutrients to plant for their growth.
3. Light Dosage
The light is a very influential factor on plant. Especially on the secondary metabolite production. Controlling the intensity of light can increase microgreens’ nutrients . For an instance, Carotenoids, tocopherol, glucoinolates and other minerals.
Although, Light exposure is a critical factor in altering nutrient profiles in microgreens.
HOW TO GROW MICROGREENS?
STEPS TO GROW MICROGREENS AT HOME
- Require a pot or try
Take a small pot or any plastic tray or baking dish of about 4 to 5 inch depth. You can get it from shops in markets or maybe you can find them at your home.
- Fertile Soil
Now, level the fertile and moist soil in the container upto an inch or 2 inch. Do remember, not to over press the soil in container.
- Sow Seed
Scatter seeds, you want to grow in the soil properly. And mix them properly in soil. After that, cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. Press gently using your hands.
- Cover the pot with clear led and plastic wraps
Now, you have to cover the container either by led or by plastic wrap. I used leaves to cover so that, seed get proper air and adquete amount of sunlight.
Microgreens need 4 to 5 hours of direct sunlight daily. Keep it in remember.
Watering is important for growing. So never forget to spray some amount of water daily. Sprinkle water twice daily. Small growing will starts to develop within 2 to 3 days. Remove the led or cover from the container.
- Microgreens begins to grow
After a week, you will see, the bunch of microgreens in your container. Full of healthy nutrients microgreens are ready to harvest.
When your microgreens are of about 3 inch in height. they are ready to harvest. Use a pair of scissors or knife to cut them out and harvest them. Hold vertically from the top and cut from just over the roots.
- Wash them and use
After harvesting wash your microgreens and use them in your plate and enjoy. Eat them raw or cooked. As per you choice.

Lets see, which microgreens are easy to grow?
Basically, some seeds like of broccoli, radish, cabbage, mustard, cauliflower, lettuce etc are grown as microgreens. But when they become mature they are consumed as vegetables.
Well, there are different types of microgreens. Cereals like rice, wheat, corn, millets as well as legumes such as chana, chickpea, beans or lentils are also grown as microgreens.
I grow some seeds of spices as microgreen also shown in the video above.
I grew seeds of Wray and Ajwain. And i used them in my salad and some snacky dishes. Generally speaking, microgreens flavors are considered strong and concentrated.
Rai is generally known as black mustard seeds. They are smaller then yellow mustard seeds (sarson)

And when it comes to microgreens. the microgreens of rai is full of nutrients like protein, vitamins (A,C, E and K), calcium, iron, fiber etc.
Ajwain have the incredible properties. Ajwai in english also known as Carom seeds. Oval shaped which are commonly used in every Indian household.
I grew Ajwain microgeens and used in my salad. Frankly speaking, it gave very nice and brilliant flavor and spiciness to it along with the beautiful color to the plate.
Additionally, Ajwain is really good for digestion and it also cure stomache. Also act as the natural mouth refresher and cure cold too.
Similarly, there re many other seeds you can find inside your kitchen or in the markets to grow as microgreens.
